What Parents Should Know About Roblox
Roblox, an online “imagination platform,” allows players to design games with a proprietary program called Roblox Studio even without knowing how to code (write instructions an electronic platform follows). These user-generated games are played by millions of users worldwide on computers, smartphones, tablets, and gaming consoles like the Xbox One. Kids can build a theme park, compete as a race car driver, star in a fashion show, or become their favorite superhero in a multiplayer game. Many games feature a chat area where players interact socially with friends and strangers.
Players can create their own avatar and add clothes, accessories, and gear to customize how they look when they play. They can also design and build their own buildings, which can be used as a virtual home, school, office, or shop. The platform has a built-in economy, allowing players to earn and spend virtual money called Robux on in-game items. The platform also has a large community of game designers who can earn six-figures for their creations.
How to Create and Sell Items on the Roblox Marketplace
Parents who want to monitor their kids’ gaming experience can set up account restrictions that block chat and other features of the site. They can also use screen time monitoring tools available on the devices their children play with, such as Apple’s Screen Time and Google’s Family Link.
Alisha Karabinus, an assistant professor and games researcher at Grand Valley State University in Michigan, advises parents to talk with their children about the safety of gaming platforms. She says she tells her children, ages 7 and 12, that they can only play with friends or in groups and never with strangers. She also teaches them to report any behavior that feels inappropriate.
